It's hard to believe, but it's been 3.5 years since the first recording session of our debut, self titled EP. I remember flying back to Vienna after being home in the states with friends & family for a few weeks. There I was, crazy jet-lagged and emotionally raw from a recent break-up, sitting in the studio for the first time. What's going on? Okay, roll tape.
I met Maria a few days later and this thing quickly developed into a pretty intense live act performing my original tunes. We started playing all over and finished the recording of this EP within a few months. I had personal and financial setbacks, setbacks with artists and audio engineers, and setbacks from life in general. It also turns out that I'd rather play for people live or drink coffee in my kitchen and work on new songs. I guess albums and studio releases are important though if you want to share your music and actually try to do a little something with it.. so here we are finally releasing this debut EP late in 2017.
Maple & Mahogany is a completely different animal now. Man, there's a lot of catching up to do. But you know, you got to start somewhere and there is definitely a charm to these five tracks. We're proud of them and they deserve to be heard. "Whispers' was even written back in '09 and was the first song of mine to ever stick around, so it's really nice to see that one get out there. We hope folks enjoy this small collection of tunes and keep us in mind as more things start to happen.
On that note, I'm thrilled to tell y'all that we're already back in the studio and half way through recording a full length album. A completely stripped down solo EP will also soon be in the works. The songs have been waiting so it's time to get recording!
Big thanks to Sean Beres for the excellent artwork. Konstantin Davy of Downfall Studio and Christoph Wimmer of Without Walls studio for their audio engineering prowess. Lisa Sorgner for the beautiful cello on Whispers & Clover Street and Felix Junger for the backing vocals & electric guitar on Leaving Shortly. Last but not least a huge thanks and hug to double bass BABE and vocalist Maria Leubolt for her awesome musicianship and friendship.
Maple & Mahogany has always been at its best as a live act. More than anything, I'm looking forward to more live performances, seeing new places and meeting new folks -- whether I'm playing solo or with Maria. Thanks for tuning in everyone. Cheers, Jason
