'Whispers' Premier

Shot over the course of a year, 'Whispers' is a short film style (aka long format) music video that explores themes of time, memory & grief -- in no particular order. Featuring actress Julia Prock-Schauer and directed by Georg Melichar, this video was a lot fun to shoot.

It was my first time in front of the camera in an acting type of role which wasn't my idea. It was rather Georg who insisted on it for a concept he had in mind. I'm a somewhat shy guy by nature, but I have gotten used to playing music in front of people, so why not? I'm usually up for a challenge. Julia & Georg were both super encouraging & supportive and I felt at ease pretty quickly. Don't get me wrong, I still felt like a huge dork, but that's normal for me.

I enjoyed the many conversations with Georg about the storyline and other ideas over some beers and whiskys (we have since started co-hosting a monthly craft beer & whisky pairing night). After a while, the story seemed to take on a mind of its own. I'm glad we gave it the time and space it needed to reveal itself.

Julia was an absolute pleasure to work with on and off set. Let's just say I fully understand how my character fell for her. Be sure to check out one of her theater performances if you are in Vienna (or South Korea) anytime soon. I'm not sure the acting thing will continue for me, but Maple & Mahogany is already diving into some other video projects, so stay tuned.

'Whispers' was the first song I ever wrote that actually stuck around. After throwing away countless songs over the years, this one just said, "I'm a keeper." That was almost 10 years ago, and if this one hadn't stuck around, who knows if I would have continued with songwriting.

It sort of eerily wrote itself one evening about 2 months before my father suddenly & unexpectedly passed away. For some reason this song came out of me.. a glimpse of intuitive foreshadowing perhaps, who knows. Nonetheless the song always meant a lot to me for these reasons and it was really gratifying to finally release a studio quality recording of it on our debut EP in 2017. It's even more meaningful now to see the song accompanied by this video and take on a whole new life.

Special thanks to Cafe Lassa and everyone who participated in the shooting (and of course to Beaver Brewing Company for hooking us all up with free beer that day).

The video will not be released online until Georg hears back from some film festivals.. so that may take some time. We will likely post it publicly sometime in 2020. In the meantime, we are proud to present a premier screening at Cafe Lassa on May 26th, 2019 -- complete with a short, 30 minute live performance. Hope to see some familiar faces there!

Cheers, Jason
